Day 9: 30 Day Anime & Manga Challenge – A Manga With A Lot Of Gore!

Anime can be pretty gory at times however, they tend to tone it down due to Japanese broadcasting.  This is what makes manga so great! For the most part you can find manga that is filled with over the top gore. For example, Berserk is far more gory in the manga series than the anime itself. Other great examples to compare are Hellsing, and Blood C (awesome anime, and manga).  You get a lot of gore in the anime series, but you get even more gory scenes in the manga. If you have the stomach I would suggest to check out the manga’s of these series I listed above. You won’t regret it!

Just recently I found a manga that pique my interest due to the summary I read, ” Kogami Kii hates his normal everyday life and wishes for something to happen. One day in the middle of class, he looks out the window and sees his teacher’s head explode when a little girl hits it. He goes to the bathroom to calm himself, but when he gets back to the classroom, he finds most of his classmates killed by the same little girl.” I was instantly curious how this manga would turn out so I decided to start reading the series called, ” Mahou Shoujo of the End” by Sato Kentaro.

I can surely tell you this manga is by far the goriest manga I have read in a long ass time. From the very first chapter shit gets crazy real fucking fast. The best way I can describe this manga is MAGICAL … it is like zombie magical girls gone mad! They are absolutely psycho killing machines. No mercy for anyone, or anything in there path. Mahou Shoujo of the End is like a combination of High School of the Dead, and Deadman Wonderland, but far more thrilling.  The plot is a bit all over the place at first because of how crazy it started from the first chapter, but don’t let it detour you from giving this manga a chance.

What I find interesting is how no character is safe! In most manga’s the main characters are protected by the plot. Meaning no matter how crazy things get in the series the main characters will not die. This isn’t always true, but for the most part it is. Mahou Shoujo of the End will have you wondering if anyone is actually safe … even the main characters! It is literally a killing fest happening all around you.

As for the art it is pretty decent! Definitely when it comes down to the gore scenes the illustrator did a great job at grabbing the readers attention. Sometimes I felt like the illustration were a bit realistic. Which would send chills down my spine, and give the story being told a more real life effect. It made it easy to picture what was actually happening as you read the manga.  Moreover, some of the panels gave off a very dark aura. What I mean by that is how they did the shading on some pages really brought out different moods, and feelings to me the reader. Though sometime the illustration did feel a little bland at times, but I am guessing they had reasoning. I mean honestly the manga is pretty non stop crazy from start to finish.  If it isn’t one thing it is another!
