Let us hold hands, and talk about the plot!
Summary: All of a sudden, they arrived: parasitic aliens that descended upon Earth and quickly infiltrated humanity by burrowing into the brains of vulnerable targets. These insatiable beings acquire full control of their host and are able to morph into a variety of forms in order to feed on unsuspecting prey. Sixteen-year-old high school student Shinichi Izumi falls victim to one of these parasites, but it fails to take over his brain, ending up in his right hand instead. Unable to relocate, the parasite, now named Migi, has no choice but to rely on Shinichi in order to stay alive. Thus, the pair is forced into an uneasy coexistence and must defend themselves from hostile parasites that hope to eradicate this new threat to their species. ( Source MAL)
Parasyte: The Maxim is definitely not an anime you would watch with the kids if you have any. This anime is a action filled sci-fi mixed with lots of gore, horror, and psychological mess … but the good kind of mess haha. Let us not forget the touch of drama either! The anime starts off with a young high school boy named Shinichi who is suddenly awaken by an odd snake like looking creature trying to go up his nose. A freaked out Shinichi now in a panic sneezes the creature out of his nose, and is ready for battle as he screams snake. This creature flies into the air, and inserts itself through Shinichi right hand trying to make its way to Shinichi brain! Failing to make its way to the brain the creature settles in Shinichi right hand, and becomes known as Migi, which in Japanese stands for right hand. Little did Shinichi know the changes, and difficulties he was about to go through. The plot follows Shinichi as he discovers these creatures known as Parasites that have come to take over the human brain, if they succeed they must survive by eating other humans … they do this without any sort of judgement what so ever.
What is really interesting is how the anime portrays the difference between humans, and parasites. What I mean is these parasites only care for themselves, where as a human generally cares for themselves, and others. So can a parasite come to understand human nature? As the story line progress we watch the characters grow, and we see that some of the parasite are able to understand human nature. For example, the character Reiko Tamura wasn’t my most favorite character until the end when we see that she has become more human like than parasite. I even like to think Migi becomes to understand human nature as the show progresses. The story line is honestly really solid, and intense to follow. If you can get pass the gore I think you will find this anime really enjoyable to watch.
Now embrace me majestically as we move onto the characters!
Parasites are an unknown organism and are the primary antagonists in the Parasyte series (Excluding Migi, Jaw & Reiko). They are a mysterious organism that appeared on earth from an unknown cause. Their origins, to this point, still remain a mystery.
Parasites go through two main stages of development.
The primal or original form. The primal form resembles a green, almost translucent snake with yellow eyes protruding out of its head, and a cone or drill like appendage on the front of its head. They almost resemble tiny tennis ball with eyes and a tail. Or, in the main character’s case, a “Snake”.
The second stage is when the parasite finds its desired host and enters its body, maturing over time inside to become in sync with the host. Parasites have skin resembling their host and insides to match, which can be changed as they desire. They can morph into various shapes and extend and harden certain parts of their body as they desire. ( Source Wiki Fandom)
When the anime first starts out Shinichi is a thoughtful, and nice person who is a bit of a pushover, and well a wimp. This is due to Shinichi awkwardness, and his huge fear of bugs. However, this all begins to change when Migi (parasite) becomes apart of his right hand. Shinichi is suddenly more aware of his surroundings, and is now really good at sports… and for some reason is no longer afraid of bugs.
Migi, who is a parasite is capable of changing his form depending on the situation… meaning migi doesn’t have a constant appearance. You will notice he is able to change into really cool weapons like an arm blade, and can create a human like eye to see, and a human like mouth to talk. Migi doesn’t show emotion like a human does for he is a parasite. His main goal is to keep Shinichi alive so that he can survive … even if this means killing his own kind. However, I like to believe that Migi is very intelligent for he is always reading books, and researching.
Reiko is a parasite who successfully took over the human brain. Take note this is how she first appears in the anime however, her appearance does change! Reiko who is an highly intelligent parasite is at first seen as cruel just like her fellow parasites. She spends a lot of her time studying the human psyche for she hopes to understands humans better. Reiko like I said before begins to understand humans better after she gave birth to a human child.
Satomi is Shinichi classmate, and love interest in the anime. I thought Satomi is your typical high school girl who has a cheerful attitude for the most part. Her crush for Shinichi is very obvious … so obvious that even her friends tease her about it.
Kana is the bad girl type who develops a crush on homeboy Shinichi. I would of loved to learn more about this next fact I am about to tell you, Kana is able to sense parasites. I thought it was pretty interesting ability that she has, but I don’t think she really understood what trouble her ability would cause her. Though Kana is the bad girl type she gives off the vibe that she is calm, and a care free person.
There are so many characters my brain may explode!
In Parasyte: The Maxim you will meet multiple of characters who are rather interesting. However, I only selected the characters that I felt were essential to the anime itself. I think the characters for the most part were well developed … though I still had some questions … like how was Kana was able to sense the parasites. It would of definitely been nice if they went into more details about that, but I mean other than a few questions that I personally had the characters aren’t that hard to follow, and understand. I do think Shinichi is your typical zero to hero type guy which is a little cliche, because most anime’s make there main character usually weak at first, and then BAM! Bad bitch express lol.
Embrace me as we dance are way to the land of animation!
To put it simply the animation is pretty basic. This does not mean it is horrible, but I have definitely seen better animation for this style anime. However, the anime did its job … which was bringing the oh shit, and scary feeling to the screen. I will admit the visuals were pretty freaking awesome when a fight scene happen, or watching a parasite transform. Plus if you think about it this anime is based off a manga from the 90’s, so they did a pretty darn good job with keeping the animation up to date for 2014.
Blah Blah Blah! My overall thoughts
Overall I was pretty impress! It took me a few episodes to really get into the anime, but once I was hooked I couldn’t stop watching. The story line got real juicy y’all , and it happen fast. It was one of those story lines that you had to know more waiting wasn’t an option type of deal. The characters were pretty well made, but did lack in some areas which some of you may find irritating, because characters do make or break an anime in my opinion. Though when I say lack I mean the creators leave you with questions about some of the characters … maybe this means a season 2, or not because it has been 4 years since the anime came out. As for the animation it was okay, but keep in mind this anime was produced in 2014. Honestly if you enjoy horror type anime’s this is something I would recommend watching.
Thank you for those who took the time reading my breakdown, I greatly appreciated a whole bunches of lot. I would love to hear your thoughts if you have watched this anime. If you haven’t watched this anime do you plan on watching it? Please let me know in the comment section below!
