Little Witch Academia Breakdown

In this blog post I am going to give you a detailed breakdown of one of my favorite animes. Little Witch Academia or LWA is truly a magical series that will sweep you right off your feet. In this breakdown I will talk about the following, the plot, the characters, the animation, the yuri, and of course give my overall thoughts.

Please be warned there will be spoilers in this review. So do proceed with caution! Moreover, please understand this review is based off my personal opinion. Meaning your opinion could be different than mine, and you know what that is completely cool my yuri friends! I would be sure to source any information that did not come from my mouth, because as I always say … plagiarism isn’t cool my dudes!

The Plot

A believing heart is your magic!”—these were the words that Atsuko “Akko” Kagari’s idol, the renowned witch Shiny Chariot, said to her during a magic performance years ago. Since then, Akko has lived by these words and aspired to be a witch just like Shiny Chariot, one that can make people smile. Hence, even her non-magical background does not stop her from enrolling in Luna Nova Magical Academy.

However, when an excited Akko finally sets off to her new school, the trip there is anything but smooth. After her perilous journey, she befriends the shy Lotte Yansson and the sarcastic Sucy Manbavaran. To her utmost delight, she also discovers Chariot’s wand, the Shiny Rod, which she takes as her own. Unfortunately, her time at Luna Nova will prove to more challenging than Akko could ever believe. She absolutely refuses to stay inferior to the rest of her peers, especially to her self-proclaimed rival, the beautiful and gifted Diana Cavendish, so she relies on her determination to compensate for her reckless behavior and ineptitude in magic.

In a time when wizardry is on the decline, Little Witch Academia follows the magical escapades of Akko and her friends as they learn the true meaning of being a witch. (Source MAL)

The Anime Series of Little Witch Academia follows Akko Kagari the main character of this series who wants nothing more than to be a great witch like her idol Shiny Chariot. However, this may prove to be difficult for Akko has no witch blood in her. Even with this in mind young Akko journeys off  to Luna Nova Magical Academia where she will try her hardest to achieve her dreams no matter what it takes . During her magical journey to Luna Nova Magical Academy she meets two other witches Sucy and Lotte, who she becomes friends with, and roommates. With her encounter with Sucy, and Lotte … Akko true journey begins. Will she able to achieve her dream, and become an amazing witch like Shiny Chariot

Little Witch Academia almost has a Harry Potter feel except for the fact that Harry is a full blood wizard who is ultimate goal is defeat the big bad well we don’t say his name! Where as LWA each episode is very different from one another, and well Akko would be considered a muggled in Harry’s world. Let us not forget her ultimate goal is to be an amazing witch like Shiny Chariot. The plot for Little Witch Academia is very enjoyable all around. It is truly a cute little series. Akko will take you on all sorts of fun adventures that will surely put a smile on your face. We also learn a lot about the witch world. For instance, how they can’t use magic everywhere without the magical stone that is kept in a tall tower shining brilliantly over the school campus. We also learn about the history of magic, and how the girl can’t leave the campus oh so freely.  I like to think the first half of the anime is mostly about Akko, and her friends adjusting to there new school life at Luna Nova, but the second half of the anime mainly focuses on the shiney rod which I won’t go into detail, because I would ruin the entire series for you lol.

The Characters

Atsuko Kagari

The main protagonist, an energetic and optimistic Japanese girl who attends Luna Nova after being inspired by the witch Shiny Chariot. Having come from a non-magical background, she struggles using magic much of the time, and is disappointed by the mundanity of her classes as opposed to Chariot’s more spectacular performances. However, her strong sense of self-confidence enables her to wield Chariot’s Shiny Rod, which accepts her as its new master. (Source: Wikipedia)

Sucy Manbavaran

Akko’s other friend and roommate, a cynical witch from Southeast Asia who specializes in brewing potions with various bizarre effects. She often uses Akko as a test subject, or to help her in gathering the poisonous or hazardous ingredients she needs. (Source: Wikipedia)

Lotte Yansson

Akko’s friend and roommate, a kind and soft-spoken Finnish witch who worries about Akko’s well-being. Her magical specialty involves summoning and communicating with fairies and spirits residing in old, well-used items. (Source: Wikipedia)

Diana Cavendish

The top student of Luna Nova who is greatly admired by her classmates and teachers alike. Hailing from Great Britain as daughter of a noble family of witches, she has a serious and arrogant nature and oftentimes clashes with Akko, whom she holds in disdain for her admiration of Shiny Chariot. She is also responsible for a few of the magical disasters that occur at the school, and usually works alongside Akko to correct them, developing a grudging respect for her persistence. Ursula Callistis

An instructor at Luna Nova. She has bluish-grey hair and wears glasses. Ursula is actually a key character in the series that you will want to pay close attention to. She also gives a lot of guidance to Akko the main character.

Chariot du Nord

Little Witch Academia - 23 - Large 18

Chariot is the French witch who inspired Akko to become one herself. She is believed by many other witches to be a charlatan, because she uses many illusion spells and is the source of a lot of false rumors about witches.

The characters in Little Witch Academia are actually very easy to like. Each one of them are very lovable, and just enjoyable to watch. I think the creator did a wonderful job at bringing the characters to life in the anime. I will talk more about bringing the characters to life when I get to the animation section. Though I will admit I at first didn’t like Diana at all due to her stuck up attitude, but the second half of the series changed my opinion about her greatly. She definitely became more likeable in the second half of the series. You will noticed that some characters have little quirks about them that I thought made the characters more enjoyable. For instance,Jasminka eats a lot, Constanze does a lot of techy things, and doesn’t talk at all … at least I don’t remember her talking, Sucy is a total sadistic in the anime, she also does a lot experiments with mushrooms, Lotte is very shy, and enjoys reading a book series called Nightfall and has fairy magic, Diana’s believes in hard work, and Amanda is the tomboy type. I personally enjoyed the quirks each of these characters have. It made them feel more realistic, and fun.

The Animation

I absolutely loved the animation style, and the visual effects used for this anime. The animation style gave off an old cartoony feel. I don’t know how to explain it, but I felt like a kid again when I was watching Little Witch Academia due to the animation. This brings me back to the characters coming to life. I love how vibrant, and expressive they made the characters facial expression. It was like watching an old 90’s style cartoon where the characters eyes would pop out, or do something that was inhumanly impossible. I thought this made the anime very fun to watch!

Overall, the colors are and lines seemed to mix well together. The characters moved nicely, and the magics scenes were pretty awesome to watch. The animation, and visual effects were done pretty well if you ask me. How do I put it the animation is very consentant. It isn’t all over the place, or changing constantly that it makes unbearable to watch. I don’t know I just personally really enjoyed the animation. Though many may not agree with me on that.

The Yuri

So Little Witch Academia isn’t labeled a yuri at all however, the ships really sail high in this anime. For example, some of the more popular ships are Akko x Diana, Akko X Succy, Ursula x Croix.  My personal favorite Ship is Akko x Diana, because well opposite do attract. Though the anime does lack yuri the ships in the anime make up for it greatly. I am sure there are more pairings than the one I named above. I would actually love to hear what are your favorite ships in Little Witch Academia, and why?

My Overall Thoughts

Overall Little Witch Academia is just an kick ass anime that is enjoyable for all ages to watch. The plot was fun, and exciting, the characters are very much likeable, and enjoyable to watch throughout the series, the animation will definitely give you that old school cartoon vibe that might take you back for a blast in the past, and though there is no yuri it is a lot of fun, and enjoyable to ship the characters together. You can even find doujins on some of the ships! Little Witch Academia is one of the many animes I have watched several times due to how much I enjoyed each, and every episode. I honestly don’t think I will ever get tired of it, and would totally be ecstatic for a third season!
